8 Things You Need to Know About the Czech Republic

1 – The Czech Republic is located in the heart of Europe

Czechia is a highly desirable destination for relocation in Central Europe. Surrounded by mountains on almost all sides, it has no access to the sea. As a result, locals often travel to nearby countries like Italy and Greece for vacation, which can be reached in just two hours by plane.

The republic shares its borders with Poland, Slovakia, Austria, and Germany.

2 – Temperatures rarely drop below zero

Czechia enjoys a mild and comfortable climate throughout the year, without experiencing extreme seasonal changes. During winters, temperatures rarely dip below freezing, and summers are warm without being overly hot.

July can be rainy, and February is considered the driest month of the year. Winter is an exciting time for skiing enthusiasts as the skiing season begins, with plenty of high-quality slopes available to everyone. 3 – They pay in Czech Koruna in the Czech Republic

The official currency is the Czech Koruna (CZK). 1 CZK is about 0,043 euros or 0,047 dollars (the data from 21.04.2023). While it is possible to pay with euros in tourist areas, it may not be as cost-effective due to high exchange rates.

It's recommended to bring euros and exchange them for CZK at specialized exchange offices. Although try to avoid those in the city center and find ones further away for a better deal.

4 – You may be required to have a visa to enter

If you are from a non-Schengen country, it may be necessary for you to obtain a visa to legally cross the borders into Czechia. Check if there is a visa-free travel agreement in place between your country and the Czech Republic.

It is highly recommended that you visit Czechia first as a tourist to see if it is a suitable place for you. People from various countries have reported no issues obtaining a short-term visa if necessary. However, it is important to note that with a short-term visa, you will not be permitted to work. For that, you will need a work visa. It won’t be a problem to get one if you have a contract with a company in the Czech Republic.

5 – Delicious local cuisine awaits you

Czechia is home to the finest breweries in the world, producing some of the tastiest beers you will ever try. It's no surprise that the country holds the world record for per capita beer consumption.

The Czechs are also creative when it comes to cooking snacks and dishes for their drinks. When visiting the country, try the following:

  • Hermelín: a cheese that's soaked in a special marinade
  • Utopenec: a spicy sausage that's served cold
  • Tlačenka: an aspic made of meat and by-products
  • Pasta with cracklings: a spread made from pork cracklings that's typically eaten on bread

Cafes and restaurants in the Czech Republic also offer a variety of tasty and hearty meals, including goulash, dumplings, pork knees, duck roast, stewed cabbage, grilled cheese, and more.

6 – There are lots of cozy cities to explore

Below is a brief list of cities that are a must-visit if you enjoy stunning architecture, intriguing landmarks, and captivating history, all of which they possess in abundance:

Prague

The Czech Republic's capital is famous for its medieval castles and bridges over the Vltava River. You might have heard about the legendary Prague Castle, which is the largest castle in the world.

Telč

This small medieval town, designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, has preserved its historic center since the 15th century almost unchanged.

Brno

The second largest city in the Czech Republic is located in South Moravia and is known for its beautiful architecture and cultural events. 8 – Stress-free travel is guaranteed

The Czech Republic has an efficient public transportation system, including buses, streetcars, and subways (in Prague), with clear timetables and routes that make it easy to get around. Ticket fares are the same everywhere, and the cost depends on the length of the trip (starting at €1.5). Additionally, the local roads and toll highways are of high quality, making traveling by car an enjoyable experience.
